Disclaimer + Announcement

October 19, 2009

frohmage_iconOne of Ohm Force’s most important goals has always been to deliver top quality audio plug-ins at attractive prices. That’s what we’ve been doing since the very first beginning nine years ago. Nevertheless, despite our internal Ohm values one external and global factor came to change these proportions. Last year’s financial collapse has been like a worldwide earthquake and, in addition of all its global consequences, here at the Ohm Force headquarter it made us think a lot about how we’ve been managing our own activity as plug-in makers. And which directions we’d want to take from now. We don’t aim to perform any in-depth analysis of capitalism’s current situation: as a music software company we’d just want to tell you what have been our thoughts. And specially the actions coming from them.

Even when talking about great effects, we do believe that audio plugins are not supposed to be something expensive, exclusive for those with big budgets. We don’t want to let Ohm Force’s effects become some more “plugins for rich people”, what started to happen specially from our American customers’ point of view due Euro’s recent big rise. A few marketing directors could say that there are still enough music producers with comfortable budgets in the world to keep the plugin industry going on but, at least for us, it wouldn’t be fun anymore. So why shouldn’t we go beyond the attractive pricing? Shouldn’t good software for make good music actually be affordable, still being a part of the huge revolution made by the computer based music production? Not only it’s time to ask ourselves these questions but also to take the initiative to answer them, instead of just waiting other people to do it.

So as an audio software company Ohm Force is doing its part and announcing: we’re globally reducing our advertised prices. And it’s not a promo: it’s for real and forever. We still do want to make money and be rewarded for our hard work: it’s still business, but let’s keep it reasonable.

High quality professional audio plugins. And still affordable.

When we say dropping prices, we really mean it: not only the plugin’s licenses are globally MUCH more affordable when purchased individually, the big ALL-ALL Bundle can now be grabbed by only 299€. By the way, we’ve benefited from the moment to tide up our bundle’s section and now live performers can choose the ALL-Live Bundle, containing the plugins from which features are specially suitable for live tweakingOhmicide:Melohman, Symptohm:Melohman and the Quad Frohmage – the three for only 199€. The first two, as the Melohman part of the name suggests, have extended preset morphing capabilities: it’s possible to morph from one preset on the fly to another using a midi keyboard controller, with a full set of configurable parameters. The latter is one of the most powerful and tweakable filter banks out there, with an advanced XADSR module, 6 midi controlled envelope followers, 6 event generators, among many other killer features.

The bottom line.

You already know Ohm Force’s mindset. It’s just about reading our mails or taking a look at our whacky website to realize that we have never had a corporate approach of what we do. We’re a 100% indie company, with no investors behind us, just a bunch of friends working on an old apartment office near a train station, trying to do everything by ourselves. Of course we’re glad to sell plugins forsuperstars, but we’re even happier when an indie youngster make the effort to invest in some Ohm Force plugins to pimp his home-studio. There are still so many new talents to be heard, so music heads of the world, let’s spend less, and produce more!

Jordan Rudess has used Ohm Force plugins to design the sounds of his Hexatone Pro iPhone app

September 9, 2009

Dream Theater’s keyboardist Jordan Rudess has recently announced JR Hexatone Pro (it’s an App Store link) for the iPhone, which is a kind of “next-generation” hexagonal loop generation tool that uses artificial intelligence and advanced randomization algorithms to produce constantly evolving sound structures. He has teamed with Amidio for developing the App and has been himself responsible for designing all the sounds/samples that comes with it. And guess what plugins he’s used to shape everything? His own words:

Once again Ohm Force plug-ins came to my rescue with my latest sonic adventure. While creating the sounds for my first official Iphone/Ipod touch app-JR Hexatone Pro, my most valued sonic resources were the extraordinary effects from these frenchies. Whenever I need an effect that is truly unique and incredibly cool, I go there first!

The app is a 6-directional drum machine/rhythm sequencer where each sequence can set to be totally chaotic, random, or strict and controlled. It’s also possible to load your own samples and there’s a way to export the audio to a external computer based DAW. Take a look at Jordan’s demo + tutorial and will understand it better…

What a joy! Unpacking the Sounds of The Universe

April 22, 2009

What a joy! As many of you know, world’s best band finally realeased their new album last weekend, called “Sounds Of The Universe”, so Amazon was finally able to ship my preordered and impatiently waited Deluxe Box Set, containing 3 CDs (the album, the bonus/remixes and the demos), 1 DVD with short films and studio sessions, two 84 pages hardback books with the lyrics and plenty of cool pictures from Anton Corbjin, 1 poster, 2 badges and several postcards – as you’ll be able to see at the ‘unpack’ pics below. The album is great and to know that they use Ohm Force plugins in their music is an additional pleasure. The only “WTF???” thing of this box is the “Authenticity Certificate”, which certifies that all that stuff is original and not some pirate versions printed in China. The ‘certificate’ is kind of fancy and is obviously ’signed’ by Martin, Dave and Andy…. but I cannot stop wondering: ” so….. those who opens their black boxes and don’t find a certificate inside, it means that they have purchased non-original stuff shipped by Amazon?”… or… “So it means that all that crowd (???) that will try to falsify Depeche Mode’s deluxe box will not also put a falsified certificate inside?”… Well…. I’m just increasing the volume on my headphones and forgetting these complex questions…

Ohm Force plug-ins at art installation in Edinburgh, Scotland

June 12, 2008

Magda, the Witchdoctor (Sowerby\'s installation)

We’re always very glad to see our plug-ins helping artits around the globe express theirselves, and we’re not talking just about musicians. Specially when it’s an independent artist, like Neil Sowerby – a plastic artist from Edinburgh – who added Ohm Force processed soundscapes to his last installation. It must have been great, since the pictures give us a fair preview of the ambiance and Sowerby’s explanation of his goals help us to try to feel as we used to be there:

“The art installation took place in April in an old warehouse in Edinburgh.  The concept was to build a trans-dimensional fairground, visible for only a few nights, that people could walk around, get equally scared and amazed and see some wonderful curiosities.

With one large room devoted to a Discotheque From Hell, the other was divided into zones such as Air, Dreams, Forest and Purgatory.  Around 12 different sound systems of varying size were installed: hidden behind scenery, in cupboards and hanging from the ceiling.  The aim was to make each zone unique in terms of soundtrack but also to allow the inevitable bleed between zones to be pleasant and in key… (continues, with some more text and several more pictures…)

Suggestiohms for new plug-in names!

June 9, 2008

Ohm Force has ohm names. Love it or hate it, it’s always been this way. Our ohmfriend Hawk Duncan loves it, til the point of having a lot of fun while figuring out some suggestiohms for some new plug-ins. It seems this guy have big ohm skills – almost as strong as us – when we talk about ohm names, check this out:

Telefohm: EQ plugin for sounding like you are underwater or on the telephone or shitty microphone (Microfohm)

Ohmwrecker: a multiband stereo widener plugin with interesting filtering options to seperate/double sounds.

Lawn Gnohm: a synthesizer plugin with harsh oscillator or LFO functions to make it sound like the track is being put through a sprinkler.

Ohmbre: spanish word for “man”.  Make it smell like body odor and pistachios.

Ohm Sweet Ohm: a plugin for level matching between tracks using sidechaining?

Hohm Alone: synthetic theremin instrument to recreate those spooky sci-fi movie sounds!

Hippohmpotamus: sub-bass harmonic extender or other bass related plugin to make things fat like a hippo.

Cohma: dither plugin/noise generator (white/pink/brown/static/AC hum etc) the kind of noise that will put you to sleep.

Tick-Tack-Tohm: auto-panner/modulated effect (vibrato/whammy/wah)

Ohmelette: sound chopper for glitchy sounds. Shaken, beaten, but not stirred..

Anyone would be ready for an Ohm names battle with Duncan?

All our plug-ins have been updated!

June 4, 2008

No big change, but several improvements we could make thanks to our chemical testing and – more importantly – the huge help from our user community. The last Mac versions had a performance problem (taxing too much CPU ). So we’ll tell you what happened: we got a letter from Greenpeace telling us that all those Macs running hot were detected by Nasa satellites as the 5th more important global warming factor – way more than cow farts! – and that we’d have 3 months to solve the problem. Ecologists of the world, we can stay zen again, the bug was fixed and Macs  are working as quietly as they should. No more performance problem for any Mac plug-in. In addition, we were able to make the following improvements:

  • several minor bugs fixed (Mac/Windows)
  • MIDI out disabled by default, fixed (Mac/Windows)
  • huge performance boost on all Mac versions (Mac/Windows)
  • some installation problems fixed (Mac)
  • unreadable presets problem, fixed (all RTAS versions for Mac)
  • bug in browser, fixed (Symptohm:Melohman – Mac/Windows),
  • mouse wheel scroll in browser added (Symptohm:Melohman – Windows)
  • bug on funky skin, fixed (Symptohm:Melohman – Mac)
  • problem recovering default presets locations when loading/saving (Ohmicide:Melohman – Mac/Windows)
  • some parameter names have changed to reflect its GUI labels (Ohmicide:Melohman – Mac/Windows)
  • crash risk when using feedback, fixed (Ohmicide:Melohman – Mac/Windows)
  • band gates were never linked, fixed (Ohmicide:Melohman – Mac/Windows)

RTAS PC coming soon!

May 13, 2008

It’s been already some time all producers running over PC computers are also able to use ProTools software and it’s compatible hardware. Thanks all the new M-Powered cards and smaller Digidesign configurations, RTAS PC platform users are en ever growing army of nomad producers and artists, small and home studios. Ohm Force supports the RTAS PC platform and we’ve been busy during last months developing the RTAS PC versions of all our plug-ins. Now we’re finishing the beta test procedure, and you gonna see the official release until the end of May. Actually, talking about beta testing, we would to special thank Ben Eggehorn, one of our beta testers in this project. He’s shown true altruism and good willing intentions while helping us a lot to kill all those crappy little bugs that comes when developing a new product version. Ben is a music producer and a musician as well, so take a look at his work !
